GEO / AEO
Structuring a site so AI systems quote it as a source, rather than only ranking it in a list of blue links.
Definition
GEO and AEO describe the same shift with slightly different emphasis: building pages to be extracted and cited by generative systems, Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, instead of solely competing for position in a list of ten links.
How it differs from traditional SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking. GEO optimizes for extraction: can a machine find a single unambiguous answer on this page, attribute it to a known entity, and reproduce it without distortion. Keywords still matter, but structure, entity clarity, and answer format carry more weight.
What it looks like in a roofing build
One page per real query. The answer in the first sentence. Services, materials, roof types, and service areas modeled as linked entities with schema. An llms.txt declaring what the site is authoritative about. No JavaScript between the crawler and the answer.
Why Roof-Rank is built around it
Because roofing buyers ask questions before they ask for quotes, and those questions are increasingly answered by an AI system that names its sources. Being the named source is the cheapest lead acquisition available to a roofing company, and it cannot be bought with ad spend.

Short answers.
Is GEO just a rebranding of SEO?+
It overlaps heavily. The practical difference is that the target is a citation in a generated answer rather than a position in a list, which changes how pages are written and structured.
Does GEO work replace ranking work?+
No. A citable page still needs to be crawlable, fast, and topically authoritative. GEO adds requirements. It does not remove any.
