AI search

What actually changes, and what does not.

An honest comparison for a roofer deciding where to spend attention.

What carries over

Almost all of the technical foundation. Crawlability, site speed, clear information architecture, genuine topical depth, and consistent local signals matter in both worlds. Anyone claiming AI search makes SEO obsolete is describing a different internet from the one your enquiries come from.

What is genuinely different

Three things. Format: the answer stated plainly rather than buried. Attribution: entity clarity about who is answering, which matters more when the answer appears without a click. Crawler coverage: several systems retrieve pages with their own crawlers, so being reachable by more than one is now part of the job. That is the whole list.

MECHANISM DESCRIBED FROM PUBLISHED VENDOR DOCUMENTATION. NO CITATION-RATE FIGURES ARE PUBLISHED FOR THIS TRADE, SO NONE ARE CLAIMED.

The uncomfortable part

An answer delivered without a click is an answer you were not paid for. For some queries, being cited is now the whole of the visibility, and the enquiry arrives later by name or by a direct search. That makes attribution harder and makes brand recall matter more than it did, which is an argument for having your name stated plainly on every page rather than only in a logo.

Where to spend attention

Fix the foundation first, because it serves both. Then rewrite your most important pages so the answer arrives in the first two sentences. Then audit entity consistency across the site, schema, profile, and citations. Everything after that is monitoring, and monitoring is manual.

What would change this advice

If retrieval systems move decisively toward licensed data partnerships and away from open crawling, the advantage shifts from being extractable to being licensed, and a contractor's own site matters less. That is a real possibility. In the meantime the work that makes a site citable is the same work that makes it rank and convert, so the cost of being early is close to zero.

What to stop doing

Four habits that were reasonable and are now waste.

01
Publishing thin pages to chase keyword volume that will never produce an enquiry
02
Writing the same answer six ways across six pages to catch phrasings
03
Measuring success as sessions when the answer may be delivered without a click
04
Burying the answer to build time on page, which now costs you the citation

What stays exactly as it was

Local search. The Business Profile, city pages, reviews, and citations still decide who gets called in a metro, and no answer engine has changed that. If you have to choose between the two, fix local search first. It produces enquiries this quarter, and it is also the entity groundwork the AI side depends on.

How to talk to a vendor about it

Ask them to describe the mechanism without acronyms. A vendor who understands it will talk about markup, answer placement, entity consistency, and crawler access. One who does not will talk about being AI-ready and may quote a citation-rate figure. Ask which study and which sector. There is no published figure for this trade.
